Falstaff; Tallis Scholars ? review

Posted by admin Comments off

Royal Opera House; Cadogan Hall, London

The boos came as a surprise. They were aimed at the production team who lolloped onstage awkwardly for their bow, as production teams invariably do, after a smart, well-choreographed company curtain call which seemed all the more crisp and stylish in comparison. Those forlorn catcalls, loud but isolated, left barely a dent in the wall of cheers which greeted cast, chorus and conductor Daniele Gatti in a new staging of Verdi’s Falstaff at the Royal Opera House.

Had you warned me I might enjoy this latest project by the Canadian-born director Robert Carsen, I would have raised an eyebrow, being fairly neutral towards Carsen’s work and even ? avert your eyes, blasphemy ahead ? to Verdi’s last masterpiece. Written in old age with a final flourish of inspiration, the score bristles with complex counterpoint, rapid madrigal patter, wild humour and explosive, trill-laden orchestration. Yet this musical brilliance far outstrips the uncomfortable amalgam of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV Parts I and II, out of which Boito constructed a libretto.

All goes at a cracking pace until fat, preening Sir John Falstaff is tossed into the Thames by the merrily cruel wives, on this occasion causing a delayed tidal wave to pour through the window into the 1950s-style dream home of Mr and Mrs Ford. The problem is the sagging third act. Since few directors manage to maintain the pace here, it must in part ? more sacrilege ? be a weakness of the work itself. Sir John, outstandingly sung and acted by the in all respects enormous Italian baritone Ambrogio Maestri, mourns human wickedness in a long outpouring, never helped by having to stand in dripping long johns, a figure of folly and water-logged pathos.

The unravelling of the wives’ deception takes place at midnight in Windsor Great Park, an interminable scene in which Falstaff is bullied and pinched black and blue by grown-ups pretending to be fairies or ghostly Herne huntsmen, here wearing identical antlers presumably borrowed, handily, from over their own fireplaces. Despite this treachery, Falstaff redeems the world from its universal cruelty by offering himself as the source of humour: witty, as well as “the cause of wit in others”, but the moment is brief, the taste bitter.

Hunting was a key visual gag in Paul Steinberg’s minutely detailed designs, all encased within huge, multi-purpose wooden walls ? not so much Herne’s oak as Herne’s oak-panelling. Brigitte Reiffenstuel’s costumes delight in tweeds, twinsets, hat pins, ruched gloves, pinched waists and big skirts. Yes, this will sound familiar to anyone who saw Richard Jones’s matchless, similarly updated Glyndebourne staging, which immersed itself more in the suburban mock-Tudor of Joan Hunter Dunn than the stuffy shires of John Bull. At Covent Garden the opera opens with Sir John in bed in somewhere like the Connaught and ends at a hunt ball ripe for Jennifer’s Diary.

The wives, in the score’s most delicious, feather-light music, plot their duping in a smart hotel dining room: stiff napery, chandeliers and synchronised tureens. Alice Ford, sung with glee and esprit by Ana María Martínez, resembles the young Princess Margaret. Kai Rüütel’s silver-voiced Meg Page is more muted, while Mistress Quickly, fearlessly and comically overplayed by Marie-Nicole Lemieux with fruity voice and un-shy cleavage, steals the show. No one else would get away with it. The Fords’ shiny, well-equipped kitchen is the breezy setting for the linen-basket scene. Everything that can nest ? spoons, ladles, saucepans, tumblers, tables, chairs ? does nest. All this order is turned to chaos by a silent movie-style crowd of men in trilbies hunting the hard-to-hide knight. It’s silly and well done.

Gatti coaxed superb colour from the orchestra, especially the ever-busy woodwind, and kept textures transparent to support the ensembles as they divided and reshaped in various contrapuntal patterns. With the exception of Maestri and Lemieux, no single singer stood out but mostly the ensemble was secure. The tenor Joel Prieto as Fenton and soprano Amanda Forsythe as Nannetta, the innocent young lovebird, were charming rather than exceptional, as was the Slovakian baritone Dalibor Jenis, whose Ford was under- or, if you prefer, over-characterised: he was dressed as an American cowboy. Despite these reservations, this was a buoyant and vivacious production, though given the mixed critical response some will regard it as a concept too far.

There was one misjudged distraction: the horse. A stuffed animal would have done just as well. Coming so soon after Ann Widdecombe’s debut in La Fille du régiment, this quest for non-musical novelty begins to feel like clutching at straws. Bit between my teeth I rang the horse-hire company to check the price. Evidently business was brisk: there was no answer. I emailed the Royal Opera: how much was the horse? The official reply came: “It is our policy never to reveal the fees for artists.” Artist? They obviously know their Catcher in the Rye. (“I’d rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human, for God’s sake.”) Taking a lead from the opera’s own gesture of honour, the ROH should now donate the equivalent of this 15-year-old animal’s fee, plus Maestri’s single riding lesson, to the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund.

The dying Falstaff, according to Shakespeare, though beyond the action of Verdi’s drama, babbled “of green fields” on his death bed. Not so many years later, Henry VIII of England met Francis I of France on a more elevated pasture near Calais: the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a lavish prototype for the jamboree Euro-summits of today. A notable difference, apart from some 2,200 sheep being consumed, was the presence of at least two composers: Jean Mouton (1459-1522) in the French camp, William Cornysh (1465-1523) in the English.

As part of the Choral at Cadogan series, the formidable Tallis Scholars gave a thoughtfully constructed programme of works by these composers, including an Ave Maria from both and culminating in Cornysh’s five-part Magnificat, one of the glories of the era. These a cappella meditations, interweaving plainchant and polyphony, sober canon and rhythmic surprise, take the listener as near extraterrestrial as you can get sitting in a concert hall. British musicians have cornered this area of repertoire.

Last week alone, as well as the Tallis singers you could hear Stile Antico (broadcast live from Oxford on Radio 3) on Monday or the Cardinall’s Musick at Wigmore Hall on Thursday ? three generations of vocal ensembles who excel in Renaissance music.

This style of singing may not attract the shouting headlines of opera stars but their virtuosity is equally exciting, their impact magical. If they want to whip up more interest with, say, a few onstage equine quadropeds, I could let them have the number of a reputable hire company who offer, as their promotional material says, the ”complete package to suit the client”, including anything from Tudor-style jousting to a rearing horse on set. At the risk of flogging a dead one, I’ll stop there.

Watch the xx Perform Another New Song

Last night, Laura Snapes filed a report on the xx‘s show at the Battersea Arts Centre in London, where they played material from their upcoming album. Now, Consequence of Sound points to video from that show of a currently untitled song, which Snapes described thusly: “Hooked around a beautiful, languid guitar slide, it’s initially not wildly dissimilar to something off of Beach House‘s Bloom. Then it breaks into militaristic drumming, followed by coy stadium heft.”

Gossip Girl Season Six Press Release Teases Final Chapter

Posted by admin Comments off

Six years after the first Gossip Girl blast rocked the Upper East Side, Gossip Girl returns for its swan song next fall. The Gossip Girl Season 6 spoilers we posted last week offered some hints at what we can look forward to in the final chapter. Now the CW has issued an official press release as well.

Here’s the network’s official, very early synopsis for the final season:

“Gossip Girl Season Six opens with the Upper East Siders working together to find one of their own. Serena has gone off the grid, beyond even the reach of Gossip Girl.”

Nate the Journalist

“Her friends fear for the worst and hope for the best, but even they can’t imagine where they will ultimately find her. Meanwhile, Blair has offered Chuck her heart, but is her love enough to help him win back his empire?”

“Lonely Boy Dan has written a new book that promises to make even more trouble than the first, and this time he has no desire to remain anonymous. Nate is determined to finally reveal the true identity of Gossip Girl, thereby making a name for The Spectator, and himself.”

“Lily and Rufus turn on one another when Rufus makes a surprising new ally who threatens Lily and her family. Anywhere else it would be too much drama to handle, but this is the Upper East Side.”

“And when Bart Bass, Jack Bass and Georgina Sparks show up to raise hell, it’s a fight to the spectacular series finale. Who comes out on top? That’s one secret I’ll never tell… xoxo, Gossip Girl.”

What do you think? Are Chuck and Blair endgame? Will he and Jack dethrone Bart? Can Ivy take down Lily? How low will S go? Has Dan lost his mind? Can Nate succeed with his ambitious goal?

Share your comments on this week’s Season 5 finale, what you’re most looking forward to seeing in the fall, and how you see all these storylines playing out in the final season, with us below:

Keane Score Fifth Consecutive Number One Album

Posted by admin Comments off

Keane’s new album, ‘Strangeland’, debuted at number 1 in the UK charts on Sunday – their fifth consecutive number one album, equalling Coldplay and Radiohead, and beaten only by The Beatles.

‘Strangeland’ made the top ten around the world. It is their fourth studio album, after ‘Hopes & Fears’ (2004); ‘Under The Iron Sea’ (2006); ‘Perfect Symmetry’ (2008) and the ‘Night Train’ EP (2010) which also topped the UK Album Chart.

‘Strangeland’ has marked a hugely successful return for the band, whose other chart-topping albums were 2004′s ‘Hopes And Fears’, 2006′s ‘Under The Iron Sea’, 2008′s ‘Perfect Symmetry’ and 2010′s mini-LP ‘Night Train’ (which also topped the UK’s main album chart).

As the Sunday Times’ Culture magazine stated, ‘Strangeland’s literate, piano-driven songs “pull the heartstrings with a strength that even a band as notoriously emotive as Keane have rarely managed before”. // Continue to the full article

Watch: Plant Plants EP2 Teaser

Posted by admin Comments off

Plant Plants have handed ClashMusic a new teaser ahead of their forthcoming EP.

London pairing Plant Plants made a big impression with last year’s debut EP. Out on This Is Music, the group match head-spinning electronics to a warped take on pop’s immediacy.

Taking time off to focus on their next step, Plant Plants have now completed their second EP. Logically titled ‘EP2′ the collection won’t be released until June 18th, although ClashMusic have been handed a quick teaser.

Featuring ‘One To Adore’, the clip boasts plenty of blue skies, cityscapes and visual effects. Check it out below.

FRAGRANCE BOND: Kanye West & Kim Kardashian Make Their Rounds Across The Pond

Posted by admin Comments off

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are across the pond in the UK hitting up events and prepping for the Watch The Throne 5-night O2 arena stint kicking off tomorrow night.  Check out their pics from the The FiFi UK Fragrance Awards inside…

Kanye West was spotted outside of his hotel in London earlier today.  Love a man in a tailored white jacket. Lookin’ good ‘Ye.

And then my fashion high was curbed.  He later returned to escort his navy maxi dress wearing girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, out for the evening.

The pair were attending The FiFi UK Fragrance Awards held at The Brewery in East London.

It’s perfect timing for Kim and Kanye in London as he prepares for his O2 concerts and she launches her new fragrance all at the same time.  And of course….the cameras never stop rolling

DJ Yoda Q&A

Posted by admin Comments off

The clown prince of hip-hop turntablism empties the contents of his psychic record bag

The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
John Williams: Star Wars Theme

It’s like a trademark stamp, so you know you’re about to get the real deal DJ Yoda show!

The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
The 45 King: The 900 Number

People don’t tend to know the track by name because it’s more of a beat loop than an actual song, but it was used in DJ Kool’s Let Me Clear My Throat and is instantly recognisable to almost anyone.

The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Super Cat Dance: Inna New York

It’s the original sample source for Nas’s big single The Don. When people hear that sample, it’s reeeewind time.

The track I wish I’d signed to my label
Riff Raff: Time

It’s like a country and western single by a rapper. Sounds wrong on paper, but it just feels right.

The track that’s been unfairly slept on this year
Luke Million: Arnold

It’s a chopped-up disco record featuring old samples from an Arnold Schwarzenegger workout video. Totally up my street.

The track that got me out of bed this morning
Juan Epstein Interview with EPMD’s Erick Sermon

OK, so this is a podcast rather than a track, but it’s what was on my iPod this morning. It’s two New York radio DJs who are systematically interviewing every golden-era rapper in the most nerd-friendly detail imaginable.

The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Joe Jackson: Stepping Out

I always assumed I’d be in my element playing a wedding because I’ve got such a love for 80s pop. But the first time I tried it, I quickly realised that it’s a very different skill to club DJing!

The ideal festival track
DJ Yoda: Somero Moombah

I was asked to create the ideal summer track for a beer company. I decided that it had to have a bit of moombahton ? a summery Latino/house/hip-hop hybrid ? and plenty of airhorns.

The best track by my favourite new artist
Action Bronson: Shiraz

He’s a rapper who was originally a chef, so loads of his rhymes are about detailed cooking instructions.

The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Xam Cho: Xam Thap An

Vietnamese folk music that I picked up when I DJed in Hanoi. Well, you did ask ?

DJ Yoda presents a Live AV Spectacular, HMV Forum, NW5, Sat

Live music booking now

The Olympics closing concert is apparently Blur‘s last one before dissolving into a couple of musicians, a cheesemaker, a wannabe politician and an occasional Phil Daniels. Before then, there are four “intimate” ? ie small for them ? warm-up gigs (1 Aug, Winter Gardens, Margate; 5 & 6 Aug, Civic Hall, Wolverhampton; 7 Aug, Plymouth Pavilions) ?

Missing the lucky dip thrills of the Olympics tickets ballot? Fear not: London’s iTunes Festival returns, taking in ? ooh ? Jack White, Usher, and ? oh ? Norah Jones and One Direction (1-30 Sep). Fill in a form, maybe get lucky ?

Blissfields has assembled some choice attractions (Toddla T, Clock Opera, real ale). Synth-indie tykes Bastille are new to the bill, as is a school sports day theme (29 Jun-1 Jul, Vicarage Farm, Winchester) ?

Speech Debelle, Anchorsong and Ghostpoet will christen the new Sound Castle venue in Hay-on-Wye next month (1-9 Jun) ?

Finally, Wilderness Festival is hooking up with Future Cinema. Bugsy Malone will be accompanied ? yes! ? by an enormous, live splurge gunfight (10-12 Aug, Cornbury Park, Charlbury).

Sympathy: Pieces for Chulhyungeum (2005)

Sympathy: Pieces for Chulhyungeum (2005)
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | 1 CD | Complete Scans | 259 MB
World/Avant Garde | Label: C&L | Cat.: CNLR 0506-2 | FF/FP

This is a full CD with music by the chulhyungeum. This instrument is an iron-stringed zither designed by Kim Yeong-cheol in the 40s. It is played by a plectrum and a pick on the left hand with possible techniques like vibration, gliding tones and bending tones. It became one of the first new instruments to play the Korean traditional style of sanjo (solo traditional music accompanied by an hourglass shaped drum). Definitely recommended for people interested in expanding the possibilities of the guitar.

Sailor Jerry Anti-Jubilee Line Up

Posted by admin Comments off

Following on from our announcement last week that Sailor Jerry and CLASH will be holding an Anti-Jubilee Punk Party at Hotel Street on the 3rd June; today we are excited to reveal the headline band?DZ Deathrays.

DZ Deathrays have been taking the UK by storm since arriving on these shores from their native country Australia, playing sold out gigs to fervent fans and whipping up a frenzy through their high energy performances and ?no rules? style.

The band are currently on tour, taking in various countries across Europe and will be playing this exclusive Anti-Jubilee Punk Party at Hotel Street as part of Sailor Jerry?s weekly music events, exhibitions and film screenings.

Hotel Street on Charing Cross Road is named after the infamous district in Chinatown, Honolulu where sailors would blow off steam during the Second World War. There, in the Hotel Street District Norman ?Sailor Jerry? Collins built his legendary tattooing reputation with his innovative style, independent values and no BS attitude. A gallery, store and cafe by day and gig and dive bar by night, Hotel Street, located on Charing Cross Road is an all-round good place for bad people.

The gig promises to be an alternative to your traditional Bank Holiday knees up and we expect the 3rd June to be fizzing with atmosphere, as it falls over the weekend when the country will be celebrating the Queen?s sixty years on the throne.

Ably warming up the party for DZ Deathrays will be a support band, which we?ll be announcing shortly and our own Clash DJ?s, who?ll be unleashing a torrent of punk classics.

Whatever your beliefs, there’s no excuse for not having a party so we?ll see you on the 3rd June at Hotel Street.

Molly Sims & Soleil Moon Frye Celebrate Liz Lange Maternity

Posted by admin Comments off

Expectant mom Molly Sims and mom-of-two Soleil Moon Frye attended the 10th anniversary of Liz Lange Maternity for Target at Glass Houses in New York City on Wednesday (May 16). With DJ Marjorie Gubelmann spinning tunes, the glowing moms helped celebrate a decade of helping expecting moms dress stylishly on a budget.

“What people don’t realize, and what Liz has done really well, is that you want to show off the belly,” Molly Sims tells Celebrity Baby Scoop. “Because if not, you look really big. If you make it tighter – I know people laugh – you actually look smaller,” says Molly, who was sporting a Liz Lange flutter-sleeve top (available at Target stores and Target.com for $19.99).

Young Kato – Drink, Dance, Play

Posted by admin Comments off

As the James Stewart classic ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ so accurately observes – “youth is wasted on the wrong people…”

But Young Kato seem to wear their age well. Precocious types, the band performed to 70,000 people in Bristol last year before penning a deal with Manchester based imprint LAB Records.

A six piece, their mixture of Friendly Fires style indie-dance and Morrissey-inspired laments are getting numerous figures in that-there music industry all hot under the collar.

The four track ?Young Kato EP? is set to be released on July 23rd, with lead track ‘Drink, Dance, Play’ hitting radio.

Channing Tatum Talks Stripping with Out June 2012

Posted by admin Comments off

With his new movie “Magic Mike” set to hit theaters on June 29th, Channing Tatum amped up promotions by landing the cover of the June 2012 issue of Out magazine.

The 32-year-old actor looked studly in ensembles from Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein for the Nino Muñoz shot spread accompanying the article titled “From Stripper to Superstar”.

Highlights from Channing’s interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Out!

On coming out with a male stripper movie:
?It?s risky. People say that women and the gay community will go see it — knock on wood — but I know straight guys won?t be like, ?Yo, what?s up man — you wanna go see the stripping movie after the game tonight?? I doubt they?ll have the balls to see it. What?s funny is that the girls don?t ask me questions about my stripping days, but straight guys want to know everything. It?s that fantasy element. It?s probably why a lot of females on Halloween are the whorey version of a ketchup bottle, or slutty nurse, which I love and respect — it?s liberating.?

On becoming a male stripper at age 19:
“I was definitely looking for something to take me into the dark side. You learn something about yourself, you learn about men, women, you see a lot of depressing s**t, people that are lost. But at the same time, the dark side can be exciting. It can feel like you?re cheating death every night.?

On having to strip down:
?I never enjoyed the taking-the-clothes-off part. You are on a stage with people yelling at you, and you feel you?re a rock star, but you?re nothing — you?re just a guy taking off his clothes, looking like a fool in a stupid outfit.?

Matt Bomer on Channing Tatum:
“He?s obviously very good-looking and effortlessly cool, but he?s also one of the kindest, most open-hearted people I?ve ever known. More than anything, he just has a lust for life that makes him want to tell stories and to dig deeper than someone who looks like him might have to dig. He kind of reminds me of Steve McQueen in a lot of ways — completely authentic and comfortable in his own skin.?

Tom Jones: Spirit in the Room ? review

Posted by admin Comments off

(Island)

Full marks for nerve to Tom Jones for opening his second successive album of stripped-down gravitas rock with Leonard Cohen’s Tower of Song, transformed from hotel-bar funk into a finger-picked country blues. Cohen’s version is a mordant, blackly comic meditation, but Jones can’t play lines about “born with the gift of a golden voice” for laughs and so he turns it, unexpectedly and triumphantly, into a eulogy for a life in music. It’s also the highlight of this collection mixing covers of rock-aristo songwriters, a couple of well-regarded cults and a sprinkling of blues, soul and gospel. It’s never as rollicking as 2010′s Praise and Blame, though a version of Tom Waits’ Bad As Me will sound agreeably demented to anyone who’s never heard the original. Odetta’s Hit or Miss answers its own question, sadly, in its transition to country-pop. Most intriguing of all is the closing version of the Low Anthem’s spectral Charlie Darwin, into which a full choir is inserted, as if to compensate in big dollops for the fact that doing “spectral” has never been among Jones’s noted virtues.

In praise of pop’s long players

Posted by admin Comments off

The reissue of Sleep’s Dopesmoker shows musicians with the nerve to really stretch a song and take listeners on a journey

The three-minute pop song is an undeniable design classic: short enough to fit on one side of a 7in, long enough to turn a repeated chorus, melody or hook into an insanely addictive earworm. But greatness can also occur when an artist changes their game up from sprint to marathon, breaking past the 180-second barrier as far as their creativity will take them.

I’m talking specifically about tunes that rely on their uncommon length for their effect, not just songs rendered radio-unfriendly by lengthy instrumental excursions. While I’ll gladly play air guitar through all 10 minutes of the album version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legendarily solo-slaked ballad Free Bird, were the 3:31 radio edit to pop on the jukebox, it’d still be enough to have me sobbing into a tumbler of bourbon. The five-minute radio edit of Neil Young’s Change Your Mind, however, has none of the impact of the 15-minute original found on his 1994 LP Sleeps with Angels, one of many of his tracks ? see also Cowgirl in the Sand, Down By the River, Like a Hurricane ? where the song’s troubled heart is only truly expressed through the cumulative power of Young’s extended, discursive and emotive guitar solos, more erudite than lyrics could ever be.

Similarly, it would be hard to imagine an effective radio edit of Sleep’s Dopesmoker, recently given a deluxe reissue by Southern Lord. When the San Jose metallers submitted the unbroken 64-minute track as their first album for London Records in 1994, they were comprehensively rebuffed, and the album shelved, leading to the group’s dissolution. “We were stubborn,” frontman Matt Pike told me in 2009. “Our contemporaries, like Soundgarden, were recording their ‘radio hits’, but we refused to. Out of integrity.” Its subsequent posthumous release saw Dopesmoker rightfully recognised as a subterranean masterpiece, and no mere gesture of bloody-mindedness: the song derives an elephantine majesty from the way its grinding, weed-soaked riffs evolve and elucidate over that most-heavy of hours.

Decades earlier, the Velvet Underground reveled in the similarly alienating perversity of the track that closed their second album, 1968′s White Light/White Heat. Sister Ray chased a two-chord chug over a quarter of an hour, John Cale’s searingly distorted Vox Continental firing off peals of crazed carnival organ as Lou Reed unspooled a foul-mouthed urban shanty of cock-sucking, drug-shooting transvestite prostitutes. Six minutes in, the song descends into a seamy chaos, where it stays for another 10 minutes, an excessive, debauched paean to excess and debauchery that’s never less than electrifying (though the engineer evidently didn’t agree, reportedly quitting the session in disgust and leaving the Velvets to improvise as the tapes rolled unattended.)

In 2002, another New York art-rock group, Oneida, took Sister Ray’s bloody-minded concept one step further with Sheets of Easter, the opening track to their Each One Teach One double album. Named in tribute to a particularly fearsome batch of blotter acid, the track opened with the whispered words “You’ve got to look into the ?”, before the Brooklyn trio hammered into a needling one-chord, two-note riff punctuated by repeated yells of “Light!”, like a stylus locked into a scratched groove, for 14 further minutes: a scourging, hallucinatory experience, a strychnine-laced mind enema.

But long songs needn’t be such masochistic (albeit rewarding) experiences. Funk artists long ago realised that “more is more”, that a sweet groove gathers exponential power the longer you play it, as long as the audience is still dancing. Many of James Brown’s finest funks could barely be shoehorned into the 7in format, broken up over two parts flowing from side A to B, cut down from even longer studio jams (check the unedited take of Escapism from the 1993 reissue of his 1971 LP Hot Pants, where Brown’s JBs happen on a vamp so hypnotic it keeps you moving, as Brown clowns his musicians at length for their “country” roots).

The advent of the 12″ single saw the rise of the disco edit, as soul evolved into grooves extended specifically for the dancefloor. Donna Summer ascended to disco’s throne via songs such as 1977′s I Feel Love; Hi-NRG pioneer Patrick Cowley remixed the track, almost doubling the length of the original eight-minute 12″ version of the Giorgio Moroder-scored mantra. Summer had made her maiden voyage into disco two years earlier with Love to Love You Baby, the album version of which found Summer simulating climaxes over sultry tantric funk for almost 17 minutes, serving as some disco-era equivalent to Ravel’s Bolero; the success of the song provoked Diana Ross’s own move towards the dancefloor with her ambitious 1976 epic Love Hangover, which segued from languid post-coital purr to urgent disco barn-burner over eight minutes.

The lushly orchestrated, deep-voiced seduction of Isaac Hayes’ 70s albums similarly soundtracked intimate moments in bedrooms across the world ? with Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra following in his wake ? but his remarkable, meditative cover of Jimmy Webb’s By the Time I Get to Phoenix, from his 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul, remains one of the most compelling portraits of love’s death. It would be an understatement to describe it as unhurried, but what Hayes humbly describes as “my own interpretation of it” is so powerful precisely because of his lengthy preamble, spending nine minutes describing what he imagined as the back-story to Webb’s ballad of betrayal and resignation, detailing the blind love of the song’s hero and the cold cruelty of his cheating partner, over Hammond-organ hum. Having so established the dramatis personae, the song’s lachrymose glide is affecting as never before; edit away Hayes’ tear-etched prologue, and its impact would be profoundly lessened.

This is but a brief sampling of pop’s excursions into the epic ? I haven’t even touched on the lengthy pleasures of Krautrock, the heart-pulse hedonism of house, the gonzo song-cycles of prog. And, of course, a surfeit of ambition, ego and indulgence is equally likely to result in travesty as triumph. But the likes of By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Sister Ray and Dopesmoker prove the risk is worth taking. As Matt Pike said of his magnum opus: “Dopesmoker was a ballsy move, but it destroyed the band. It also made us legends.”

Four stars for Falstaff ? review

Posted by admin Comments off

Royal Opera House, London

Since it pensioned off Franco Zeffirelli’s naturalistic 1960s production of Falstaff, Covent Garden has struggled to find a successor that could successfully capture the many qualities of Verdi’s late masterpiece. Robert Carsen’s new staging is the Royal Opera’s third post-Zeffirelli effort and, while this one may not endure for decades either, in some ways it is the house’s best shot so far.

Carsen sets Falstaff in a posh, postwar, panel-lined country hotel, inhabited by conservative hunting chaps in plus-fours and handsome women in glamorous New Look frocks. The fat knight racks up his room service bill and behaves like a cad in the smoking room, while Bardolph and Pistol pocket the dining room silver and the lady diners’ handbags. Alice Ford’s home, by contrast, is 1950s gaudy gadget heaven. There’s not a hint of Windsor or its forest, but there is a notable (and distracting) cameo for a horse. The production also lacks the unerring wit and sense of place and period that marked Richard Jones’s similar updating of the piece for Glyndebourne, with which Carsen’s staging will inevitably be compared.

Carsen has a musical grasp of the piece, though, and he understands that Falstaff is more than a romp. Everything sung by the young lovers Fenton and Nannetta (Joel Prieto and Amanda Forsythe, both excellent) is carefully set apart from the onrushing tumult elsewhere, just as Verdi’s score indicates, while Ford’s jealousy monologue, muscularly delivered by Dalibor Jenis disguised as a good ol’ boy tourist, is effectively cradled in an eerie half-light. These are rare moments of intimacy in what is too grand and frantic a production.

Vocally, standards are uniformly good rather than remarkable, but then Falstaff is an ensemble opera rather than a star vehicle. In the title role, Ambrogio Maestri may lack the vocal allure of some of his predecessors, but he is confident and sympathetic, subtle of tone when needed, and certainly looks the part when he goes wooing in his full hunting regalia. Ana María Martínez is a bright-voiced and sexy Alice, a natural leader of women, and Marie-Nicole Lemieux ticks lots of boxes as Mistress Quickly.

In the pit, Daniele Gatti‘s conducting is less conventionally Italianate than a touch Germanic ? with shades, not always convincingly, of Carlo Maria Giulini’s 1980s performances. There is lots of attention to dark orchestral detail, and Gatti seemed keen to underline that Falstaff is the work of a composer who knew his Wagner. That is fair enough, given there is even a discreet quote from Parsifal, which Gatti has conducted at Bayreuth, near the start of the final act.

Heavy Metal Isn’t Just For Metalheads Anymore

Posted by admin Comments off

Bookstore shelves are loaded with titles offering the same stale retelling of rock history. In his new book No Sleep ‘Til Sudbury, rock critic Brent Jensen takes a different tack by providing a no-holds-barred narrative look at what it was like growing up in the 80s as a hard rock and heavy metal fan in a small northern Ontario town.

The rock history is here and some academic treatise is included as well, but these aspects are uniquely woven together with personal experiences and biting commentary to make No Sleep ‘Til Sudbury a highly entertaining observation of the power of musical nostalgia as a pop cultural force.

On Aerosmith – ‘There is Old Aerosmith, and there is New Aerosmith. Old Aerosmith is that slutty Jezebel that would take you upstairs to deliver the groceries at the end of a sloppy late-night boozefest. // Continue to the full article

Slash: Apocalyptic Love

Posted by admin Comments off

Be among the first to hear Slash’s new album, Apocalyptic Love, and tell us what you think in the comments

You don’t need to know much about rock’n'roll to know Slash more or less defines the idea of the guitar hero. Across five albums with Guns N’ Roses, two each with Slash’s Snakepit and Velvet Revolver, and a previous solo album, he’s shown just what can be done with an amped-up Gibson.

Now ? backed by Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators ? he’s back with a second solo disc. “A lot of this record was written on the road ? musicians that say they can’t write on the road are usually busy doing something else,” Slash has said of this album. “I think it’s been my way of keeping myself out of trouble, to take all the energy I used to put into partying and spend it on the guitar. But it’s very inspired. It’s not like I make myself do it. I get to my room and I’ve got ideas so I’ll work on them, rather than waiting until later.”

Have a listen, and let us know what you think of Apocalyptic Love. We’ll only have this exclusive stream for 48 hours ? so get to it.

Jessica Pare Talks “Mad Men” & Toplessness with New York Magazine

Posted by admin Comments off

She’s landed herself a role on the most lauded series the small screen has to offer, and Jessica Pare now finds herself gracing the cover of the latest issue of New York Magazine.

The 29-year-old Canadian actress is dressed in a Rochas top, Jet Jeans, Jimmy Choo shoes and earrings by Craig Evan Small Estate Jewelry for the flirty Zachary Scott shot front page while talking about topics including her topless scene in “Hot Tub Time Machine” and gig as Megan Draper on “Mad Men”.

Highlights from Miss Pare’s interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to New York Magazine!

On being mostly known for a minute-long topless scene in 2010?s ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’:
?I cross into the States from Canada a lot, and the border guards always say, ?You?re an actor, what have you done?? I always try Mad Men, but I guess it?s not our target audience. So then I?m like, ?Hot Tub Time Machine?? And they?re like, ?We love that movie!??? She adds, ?I think tits can be funny. Please don?t make that the headline.?

On all of the fuss over her teeth:
?I forget about them because they?re in my face and they do their job just great. I never get anything stuck in them.?

On thinking her ‘Mad Men’ role was short term:
“Every time I did an episode, I didn’t know if I would be back. I was just happy to sit in the background if they did a scene in the reception area. I kept saying, ‘Two words: closed casket’. It (season premiere) opens on a closed casket. Pan up to Don, bereaved, winks at a blonde down the aisle. Bye-bye, Megan.”

How we made: Gary Kemp and Steve Norman on True

Posted by admin Comments off

‘I still get berated for the line “Take your seaside arms”, but it’s from Nabokov’s Lolita’

Gary Kemp, songwriter/guitarist

I wrote the song at my parents’ house, where I was still living at the time. As a working-class boy, I wouldn’t think of moving out till I got married. I was infatuated with Clare Grogan [the Altered Images singer and star of Gregory's Girl]. I met her on Top of the Pops and, at one point, travelled up to Scotland to have tea with her and her mum and dad. Although my feelings were unrequited and the relationship was platonic, it was enough to trigger a song, True, which became the name of our 1983 album, too.

True is about how difficult it is to be honest when you’re trying to write a love song to someone. Hence: “Why do I find it hard to write the next line?” The lyrics are full of coded messages to Clare. I’m still berated for the line “Take your seaside arms” but it’s straight out of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, which she had given me as a present ? although in the book, it’s “seaside limbs”. The line “With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue” is also a bastardisation of Nabokov. I don’t want to embarrass Clare. I was 22 and she was 18. True was really a song about me and my idea of love.

The bit that goes “Listening to Marvin all night long” was a reference to me and Steve Norman, the band’s saxophonist. We were massive soul boys: we loved MTV, the Face magazine and all that glossy stuff, so this was us taking an anti-rock stance. The inky press loved blues and reggae because they were about suffering. They didn’t like soul because it was aspirational, all about dancing, wearing great clothes and having sex. They saw it as vacuous. So namechecking Marvin Gaye was a defiant statement aligning us with the London soul boy culture stretching back to mod. And I’d loved Mott the Hoople singing about T Rex in All The Young Dudes so was pleased to reference another artist in a song.

I remember thinking that we no longer wanted to be a cult band. We’d always been about what was hip, but it’s impossible to keep that going when you’ve been on Top of the Pops six times. We were leaving the London club scene and starting to sell records around the world, so the next album really needed to be pop.

We’d always recorded in London, but this time we went to the Bahamas, to Compass Point in Nassau, because a lot of soul records had been made there. Talking Heads were there at the same time, sitting in the shade on the other side of the pool, while we wore shorts and flip-flops and roasted in the sun. It added to the groove.

Musically, I wanted to write something like Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together with its line: “I’m, I’m so in love with you.” But it came out as: “Huh huh uh-huh huh.” It was seen as such a strong hook that it became the intro. I feel sorry for Martin [Kemp, bass-player] because he didn’t perform on the track. We used a bass synth because we’d liked the sound of it on Imagination’s Body Talk.

When we listened to the playback in the studio, everyone suddenly started singing along, the road crew and everything. I think we knew then it was a No 1.

Steve Norman, saxophonist

Everyone remembers the sax solo on True but I actually started off as a drummer. I could never afford a full kit, though, so I got a guitar. Then, when it turned out there wasn’t room in the band for another guitarist, I looked around for a different instrument. I first blew sax on Gently, the B-side of Instinction, having taught myself. The thing I love about saxophone is you’re virtually singing into it: it’s the closest thing to the human voice.

The solo is actually a composite of two takes. I’d only been playing a year and was listening to Grover Washington Jr’s Just the Two of Us with Bill Withers, over and over. The solo is a reply to that: at the key change things just lift off, giving the song a moment of elation.

David Bowie was a massive influence on us: his constant metamorphoses inspired us to keep changing. As soon as other people tried to catch up, we’d do something else. We had horns on Chant No 1 and then suddenly everyone had horns.

Spandau Ballet had a friendly rivalry with Duran Duran. In the studio, we used to leave each other insulting messages, jokes and caricatures. But when True came out, they sent us a message saying: “Guys, this is fantastic.”

Will Barack Obama Perform With Jay-Z?

Posted by admin Comments off

Jay-Z has seemingly invited Barack Obama to perform at his Budweiser Made In America Festival.

Barack Obama is the hip hop President. The first African-American to lead the United States, the politician intersected with rap culture – reaching out to some MCs whilst also abhorring some fringe elements.

Jay-Z is set to host the Budweiser Made In American festival later this year, and the rapper could be planning a surprise guest. Chatting with Rolling Stone, the magazine teased the hip hop icon about the possibility of Barack Obama making a guest appearance.

“Ah, yeah, that guy. I’m gonna try” he said. “I’m gonna tell you guys right now: I’m gonna give him a call and I’m gonna try to get him to perform ? do a little rendition of Al Green ? but I doubt it. I think that opens up the political season. He’ll be so far into helping the world that he probably won’t have time, but I’m absolutely going to ask him.”

Barack Obama, of course, broke into an impromptu of ‘Let’s Stay Together’ earlier this year. Watch that clip below.

Freddie Mercury to Appear as an “Optical Illusion” at Queen Show

Freddie Mercury to Appear as an "Optical Illusion" at Queen Show

The BBC has the latest update on the continuing hologram– excuse me, “optical illusion”– story: The late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury will appear at a staging of the Queen musical “We Will Rock You” in London on May 14. Queen guitarist Brian May stressed that Mercury won’t appear in the same hologrammed fashion as 2Pac, though. ”It’s an optical illusion of sorts”, he told the BBC. “People will come out saying, ‘did we actually see Freddie?’” I have a good answer for anyone asking that question.

Also, May is calling firsties on this one: “It’s a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we’ve been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while”, he said. This is just like the Russians and the Americans racing to land on the moon, all over again.

The musical performance will celebrate 10 years of showings of “We Will Rock You” at London’s Dominion Theatre. Robert De Niro, who’s produced the show in the past, is scheduled to make an appearance.

Watch the video for Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”, featuring the real Freddie Mercury:
